The Office for National Statistics has published an updated version of ‘Coronavirus, the UK economy and society, faster indicators‘. This is new data and experimental indicators on the UK economy and society, including information related to the coronavirus. Indicators are constructed from rapid response surveys, novel data sources and experimental methods. Part of this publication is made up of the Coronavirus and the economic impacts on the UK bulletin, which is based on responses from a new voluntary fortnightly business survey. In the period 6 – 19 April 2020, the data shows that:

  • 23% of responding businesses reported that they had temporarily closed or paused trading, while 77% reported that they were continuing to trade.
  • 58% of businesses reported that their turnover had decreased compared with normal.
  • 67% of responding businesses had applied for the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (CJRS), with 28% of the workforce in these businesses being furloughed.
