Treasury Recoups £230m in Unspent Traineeships Cash over last Two Years

The Department for Education recently announced its decision to scrap its pre-employment programme and would be “integrating” it into existing 16 to 19 programmes and adult education provision from August 2023. New figures have revealed that just a third (34.1%) of the government’s traineeships budget was spent during the past two years – with education chiefs handing back nearly £230 million to the Treasury, rather than reinvesting it in other programmes.
