HMRC has published “clarification guidance” emphasising that all independent providers – many of which were unaware of the requirement – must charge VAT on Advanced Learner Loans. Some providers who had not been charging VAT have been given a historic reprieve due to inaccurate HMRC advice being given but those providers need to look at their practices now the clarification is available.
