This publication updates the apprenticeships statistics to include the latest monthly data on apprenticeship starts, reported to date. This provisional data now covers August 2023 to May 2024. Key data includes:
- Apprenticeship starts were up by 1.1% to 278,590 compared to 275,630 reported for the same period in the previous year.
- Under 19s accounted for 25.1% of starts (70,020).
- Advanced apprenticeships accounted for 43.0% of starts (119,900) whilst higher apprenticeships accounted for 36.1% of starts (100,490).
- Higher apprenticeships continue to grow in 2023/24. Higher apprenticeship starts increased by 7.3% to 100,490 compared to 93,670 in the same period last year.
- Starts at Level 6 and 7 increased by 6.6% to 44,060 in 2023/24. This represents 15.8% of all starts for 2023/24. There were 41,340 Level 6 and 7 starts last year (15.0% of starts in the same period).
- Starts supported by Apprenticeship Service Account (ASA) levy funds accounted for 66.6% (185,450).
- Apprenticeship achievements increased by 12.5% to 118,770 compared to 105,600 last year. Please note: COVID-19 restrictions and assessment flexibilities affected the timing of achievements, therefore care must be taken when comparing achievements between years as some achievements expected in a given academic year may have been delayed to the subsequent year.
- Learner participation decreased by 2.3% to 687,770 compared to 703,670 last year.
