The Association of Employment and Learning Providers has called for the apprentice minimum wage should be scrapped and instead, apprentices should simply be paid the national minimum wage. AELP CEO Mark Dawe said that the “general feeling” among AELP members was that “the apprenticeship minimum wage is now not appropriate and ought to be scrapped”. He acknowledged that paying the national minimum wage in “lower wage sectors, with lower margins” would be “challenging for the employers”. but added that “What our providers would say is that you get better retention of staff, whether they’re apprentices or not, paying reasonable wages,”.
