Restart Programme Announced to Support Long Term Unemployed

In the Spending Review, the Chancellor announced £2.9 billion funding for a new three-year Restart Programme to help people who have been unemployed for over a year to find new work. This will target people on Universal Credit within the Intensive Work Search group. The programme will provide regular intensive support, via fortnightly meetings for up to a year, from local providers. The DWP has said that providers will work with community organisations, including local authorities, to deliver tailored support for individuals which could include training to switch to growth sectors by providing support through recruitment stages, updating IT skills and/or getting the right certificates to take up a job in a different industry, such as construction or transport.
